LONDON

“I love your place, Libbie,” I told my sister as we walked back into the living room after she’d given me a tour.

“I just knew it had to be ours after we saw it. Luke was really not happy about me paying for it, but he compromised.”

“Do you remember when Mom and Dad would argue, and the word ‘compromise’ would come up over and over again?”

“I remember! And to think, he and I arranged a huge one before we were even married!”

“I am so sorry I doubted you, Libbie Lou Who.”

“I’m sorry you did, too, Loni, but it’s time for us to get past it. You’ve seen the error of your ways, or at least it seems like you have. I have a better understanding of your worries and where you were coming from. Now we can just move forward.”

“Luke told you about my visit?”

“Of course,” Liberty said with a laugh. “Even if he hadn’t planned to, the truth would have come out anyway. I’d cooked this big dinner, and he came home so stuffed with bacon and beef jerky that he couldn’t eat a bite.”

“I can’t believe you’ve started cooking,” I told her, amazed at how things had changed over the last few months.

“I don’t know that most of it should be considered cooking, per se. Although I have made a few decent dishes, the majority of them are miserable failures. I do make one hell of a sandwich, and I can cook anything breakfast-related, so there’s that.”

“I muddle through. Neither one of us is ever going to be as good at it as Violet, I’m afraid. She’s just got natural talent in the kitchen. I need explicit instructions and supervision.”

“How is she?”

“She’s sad,” I told Liberty with a grimace. “I told her how pissed I was at her for twisting my words, and I admitted I should have told you that I wasn’t on board with what all they were saying. I told her that she has to make her own peace with you, though. I’m not the mediator this time.”

“I’ve done a lot of thinking, and Luke and I have talked about it quite a bit. He sort of understands where her worry comes from, but he doesn’t like the way she went about it, considering she knows some of those guys pretty well and has even called some friends.”

“I’m Switzerland, Lib. Mouth is shut, lips are zipped, and I’m just gonna sit back and enjoy some hot cocoa and fine chocolate. If you want to use me as a sounding board, I’ll listen, but I’m not giving any advice to any of you unless specifically asked.”

“I want you to be here when I talk to Vi and maybe if I decide to talk to Lena about it, Loni. Can Switzerland do that?”

“I’ll have to check the Geneva Convention rules, but I believe so.”

“I’m not sure I’ll ever trust Lena again.” I didn’t say a word. I just listened to Liberty talk it through for a few minutes as she explained her train of thought.
